Abstract:

The well-behaved peritoneal catheter guarantees the success of peritoneal dialysis (PD). Catheter complications are the common and important reasons why PD patients drop out of treatment and transfer to hemodialysis, and can even affect further popularity and development of PD. With the optimization of catheter technology in the recent years, there are several configurations of PD catheter design that may impact on catheter function, and thus determine the catheter survival and clinical outcome of patients, such as the number of cuffs, the shape of the intraperitoneal segment, and the subcutaneous configuration. Based on relevant evidence-based medicine studies and all the catheter-related risk factors that could be prevented and controlled with or without technology, this article is supposed to explore and spread use of combined interventions of traditional Chinese medicine and western medicine to treat non-infectious complications, in order that the catheter survival will be enhanced and the outcome of PD patients will be improved.
