Progress in the pathogenesis and treatment of uremic pruritus

Abstract:

Uremic pruritus, whose pathogenesis is complex with limited efficacy of treatment,impacts seriously on the life quality of patients with end-stage renal disease, and has always been a problem for both uremic patients and doctors. In this paper, factors involved in the pathogenesis of uremic pruritus have been introduced, including immune inflammation hypothesis, opioid hypothesis, skin xerosis, plasma histamine level, hyperphosphatemia and hypercalcemia, etc. Besides, the treatment progress of uremic pruritus is also discussed.
